Common types of dental emergencies

There are certain types of dental emergencies that a person may come across at any time:

1 - Severe toothache

Severe toothache is the most common type of dental emergency that can be alleviated by a carious tooth, infection, or abscess. Patients experience throbbing pain, swelling, or increased sensitivity during a toothache. Dental abscess i.e., a pus-filled infection around the gums or the tooth root, needs immediate treatment as it can quickly spread to other areas if remains untreated.

What to do: Contact us immediately on our number, Don’t take over the counter medicines without our dentist prescription.

2 - Knock out tooth (Avulsed tooth)

Dental emergencies can occur due to accidents in which a complete tooth is knocked out from bone. This is referred to as an avulsed tooth. It can happen while playing sports or when a child accidentally falls in school or playground. What you do in the first few minutes can save the tooth.

What to do:

1. Stay calm and find the tooth immediately.

Pick it up by the crown (the white chewing part), not the root (the part that was inside the gum). Touching the root can damage the delicate cells needed for healing.

2. If the tooth is dirty, rinse it gently with tap water or saline, do not scrub, brush, or use soap/chemicals.

3. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket with the help of some one.

- Hold it by the crown and gently push it back into the gum socket.
- Ask the patient to bite down softly on a cloth or gauze to keep it in place.
- This is the *best option* if possible and if the person is conscious and cooperative.

4. If reinsertion is not possible, store the tooth properly.

- Place it in *cold milk* (best medium) or keep it in *saline solution*. - - If nothing else is available, place it inside the patient’s *cheek (saliva)* — but only if they are conscious and not at risk of swallowing.

Avoid keeping it in water for a long time (it damages root cells).

Rush us immediately.

The tooth has the best chance of survival if replanted within 30 minutes.

- After 1 hour, chances decrease significantly.

Do NOT:

- Do not touch or scrape the root.
- Do not let the tooth dry out.
- Do not delay in seeking professional care.

Summary

Replant the tooth right away if possible. If not, keep it in milk/saline/saliva and rush to the dentist within 30 minutes.

- Broken or cracked teeth also require immediate treatment which is usually caused by trauma, biting hard foods, or underlying decay. In this condition, nerves of the teeth are exposed which can lead to severe pain and sensitivity, need an immediate treatment.
